Home of the all things geek conversation

Do you like conversation on a variety of topics? Feel like no one wants to talk about the things that interest you? Tired of only hearing the same political, sports, or catastrophe talk. Yeah, we feel that way too.

Join two high functioning geeks as they discuss just about anything under the sun. We can’t tell you what we’ll be talking about each week because we don’t know where our brains will take us. It will be an interesting conversation, though. So hang on and join us – here comes the Relentless Geekery.

Alan Baltis is an alpha geek, an app/website/database developer, consultant, author, & speaker. He’s a music lover, game player, puzzle solver, movie buff; a fan of stand-up comedy & live music and theater. He’s a life-long reader & collector of comic books (with more than 40,000), as well as tens of thousands of magazines, books, puzzles, games, CDs and LPs. He’s a hiker & traveler who has been to 48/50 state capitols with his wonderful wife, Colleen, & dozens of National Parks, museums, zoos, galleries, historic sites, & oddities. He loves origami, mosaics, fractals, and trompe l’oeil artwork. He’s in Ripley’s “Believe It Or Not” for having hugged 833 people in an hour, a world record at the time. He’s a 40-year and life member of Mensa. He won on Jeopardy, baby, in 2013. He loves deep-dish pizza, peanut M&Ms, Diet Dr. Pepper, & pretentious drinking. Email him at alan@relentlessgeekery.com, or friend him on Facebook & far too many other social media sites.

STEPHEN BIO – A short bio? So – let’s not cram everything in here, no need to brag. You want the basics? Computer programmer but also went to school for music and was a professional musician on a cruise ship. Yes, I have woken on the side of a mountain and watched the sun come up from behind the next mountain. Working to publish my second book. Other accomplishments forthcoming. Married, 6 kids, 4 dogs, 3 cats. And some fish.

Episode 27 – Holiday Traditions

It’s Thanksgiving time! We talk about a lot of our holiday traditions and cooking. This year may be different, but we have a lot to discuss including how telling ghost stories used to be a tradition.

We discuss a bit about getting guests on the show at times. Some good people out there that we know. We are open to suggestions if you have any nominations.

Episode 25 – Voting and Alzheimer’s

What else would we talk about a week after our elections and the first episode after our live broadcast episode?

It wasn’t really our intention to discuss the voting, but that’s how things go sometimes. We look at different aspects of the voting and from multiple perspectives.

We have discuss health in the past, but the scary disease for brain people is Alzheimer’s. Alan’s mom has been diagnosed, and Alan has delved into the topic. So we talk about it and what you can do.

Episode 24 – Halloween Live Broadcast

We celebrate Halloween with a live broadcast!

For the annual Chicago Hallo-weem, we do a live discussion of our favorite Halloween-ness.

We start with discussing what makes something scary and the different sub-genres of horror.

There are a ton of movies talked about: Halloween, Get Out, Evil Dead, Exorcist, Children of the Corn, American Werewolf in London and many more.

We also discuss favorite scary video games like Doom, Silent Hill, Resident Evil, Alan Wake and more.

The discussion runs longer than normal because we have some audience questions. Hope everyone enjoys the discussion and look for our special live Christmas broadcast where we’ll talk about our favorite Christmas movies.

Episode 23 – Digitization

We have a couple issues with connectivity on this episode, but we persevere.

Digitization is part of all the conversations. we talk a bit about computer backgrounds and screensavers to start. And now that almost everyone uses Zoom, we also add virtual call backgrounds to our personalization list.

Digitization also has affected a lot of our favorite music artists. Many of them have released their catalog digitally. This allows people access to their music that may not have been possible before.

Of course, since our whole talk is digitized as we go, there are some problems and we have to splice together 2 different sessions. That’s the digital life.

Episode 22 – The big collector question

We are gearing up for our big live podcast event happening Halloween night! For all those ‘going’ to Chicago WEEM – can’t wait!

We talk a bit about ergonomics of computer desks and how that’s more of a topic as you get older. This leads to discussing TV shows that we’ve come to appreciate more being older than we did younger.

The big question we discuss for comic book collectors is when to sell? Should you get rid of a book that is worth good money or not? And when is collecting too much?

Episode 21 – Welcoming Fall

Alan just had his eyes checked, so we discuss vision, lasik, and how our eyes can be tricked.

And since it’s fall, we discuss the activities we can still do this year – like camping and hiking. We have some skills that can save us from the apocalypse.

Episode 20 – Watchmen In Depth

We’ve been wanting to do this episode for quite awhile. The hold up was that Stephen had not actually read the comic. So, we’ve put it off for both of us to catch up on the comics, movie and the new HBO series.

Most of this episode has to do with talking about Watchmen. If you haven’t read it or seen the movie, spoiler alerts galore!

Episode 19 – LeVar Burton Campaign

While we talk a bit about deep topics like entomological and eponomous, we quickly delve into comic book discussions. Several stories that have affected us pretty deeply – Renew Your Vows and One More Day – are talked about.

The fun doesn’t stop there as we talk about how video games and Dungeons and Dragons affect people. While video games are a reality altering immersive experience, Dungeons and Dragons is more creative without triggering people’s destructive capabilities.

Before we sign off, we have a couple big announcements. We are doing a couple LIVE podcasts. At the end of October, Chicago Mensa does a big RG called Weem that we are doing a podcast for. Then in December, we are doing the same for the Cincinnati RG.

Here’s where we need help. Next years big international AG is going to have LeVar Burton! We want to campaign to do a live podcast and get Mr. Burton on with us! So we need help. If you talk to any AG committee, mention that it would be great to have him on our podcast. Or send an email alerting Mr. Burton to our podcast. We would love to chat with him.

Episode 18 – Amusing ourselves with social media and Alan’s anniversary

There is a documentary out about social media and we discuss the good/bad and how social media is changing us as a culture and people.

Stephen also has another podcast – Discovered Wordsmiths – and he talks about a couple of the books from that podcast. This leads us into talking about different types of stories and ones we’ve liked.

Board games come up, but it’s about the games you can play on the iPad or outdoors with others.

And finally – Happy Anniversary to Alan and Colleen! Alan talks about their very cool wedding at the zoo.

If you haven’t heard of our rivalry – my son has a podcast with friends called “Nerds of the Roundtable.” They discuss comic books and have sworn to get more people listening to them than to the ‘old guys.’ So please – don’t let the kids beat us – subscribe!
